Once the coffee has been through the production processes, it is ready to be exported. In Papua New Guinea when the coffee is ready for export, the coffee is sent down to the coast for final sorting in one of the factories and before export. These exporters sell to buyers across the globe whose orders are usually hundreds or thousands of tonnes. These buyers are usually huge multi-national companies or importers in your country. Workers filling coffee bags to load onto trucks to take to a waiting ship ![]() Normally a coffee roaster in Australia will buy his green bean from an Australian importer. The importer most likely buys his green bean from an exporter in the origin country where the coffee is from. The exporter in the origin country may be a coffee processing factory but is usually another business that buys the coffee locally and exports internationally. As you can see there is potential for a lot of "middlemen". At each of these middlemen there is a possibility that the integrity of the coffee can be compromised. It is very rare that a coffee roaster can source his coffee straight from an exporter in the origin country and even rarer that they can source it direct from the growers and producers of the coffee. Green bean coffee in 60kg bags waiting to be transported to a ship ![]() At Kokoda Coffee we source our coffees direct from the growers and producers in Papua New Guinea and import directly to our facility in Ashgrove, Brisbane, Australia. Our orders of coffee take approximately 3 weeks to get from Papua New Guinea to Brisbane. We order smaller amounts of coffee frequently to ensure maximum freshness. We cannot stress enough that coffee is a food product, the fresher the better. Ordering direct from the growers and producers and cutting out all the extra middlemen like factories on the coast, exporters and importers also makes sure that more profit goes into the pockets of the local growers and producers. Having actually lived in Papua New Guinea and worked in the coffee industry there, we feel that this is one of the best ways we can give something back to Papua New Guinea and its people.
